Ten chapters into The Yearling yet? Has it started getting interesting? C'mon, you have to admit the chapter where they chased Slewfoot into the swamp and the dog got maimed was pretty intense. And there are a few good quotes to consider from within the first few chapters:

Penny Baxter: "And don't you grow up like the Forresters, killin' meat you got no use for, for the fun of it. That's evil as the bears. You hear me?"

Jody Baxter: "I liked the trackin' and the trailin'. I liked seein' the saplin's broke down and the ferns in the swamp...I liked old Julia bayin' now and again--"
Penny: "But the fightin's right fearsome, ain't it, son?"
Jody: "Hit's mighty fearsome."

Penny: "Hit's a hard law, but it's the law. 'Kill or go hongry.'"

And then this statement (from page 44) that most of you should understand quite well if you think about it for a while: "His father was the core of safety." Ain't it the truth?

I'm going to go read some of the class blogs now. More later!
