Student of the Month: October 2011

Sierra Templeton is a student who is more than willing to tell you what she can’t do. She says in her most recent Honors English blog, “I am not the poet or straight A 100% student or the one who teachers always seem to adore….” So, even though I know she will have to fight the urge to argue with me while I stand up here and say nice things about her, I am going to tell you about some things she CAN and DOES do.

When the call goes out at the beginning of each month for the name of an outstanding student, I start by going down the roll to see who has an A. Guess what? Sierra does!

Then, I look over my seating charts to see which of those A students are cooperative, friendly, and helpful. Sierra is!

I narrow the field down a little more by looking at some work. Do they answer those literature questions with complete and thoughtful responses? Do they fill in ALL the blanks on the book review outline? Do they turn things in on time? Sierra does!

Finally, I check to see which of these students has gone “above and beyond” by participating in our voluntary, online Honors English program, which requires a lot of extra reading and writing. And guess what: Sierra Templeton is my ONLY student so far who does ALL these things.
But there’s more….

I also happen to know that she is an accomplished ballroom dancer, and that she is on the high school swim team (where she occasionally gets kicked in the face, which is very painful but makes for some interesting blogs)!

So, even though she doesn’t consider herself a “poet or a straight A 100% student or the one who teachers always seem to adore,” Sierra earned this honor with her academic excellence, diligence, dedication, and willingness to “spread her wings” and take on new challenges. She deserves it!

(And there is at least one teacher who adores her.)

no. Do you realize how dishonest it is to lie on your blog!? thank you for the honor though. I am very honored, especially because I hear that it is a huge deal if it comes from you (from your former students that I know).
